How much does it cost to use Hatch?
The use of Hatch and its materials is entirely free.
Can I use Hatch if I don’t live in Watertown?
Yes, you just need a valid Minuteman Library Network card. If you don’t have one, any Massachusetts resident with proof of address and photo identification is eligible and can register at the main library on 123 Main Street.
I want to go to Hatch but I don’t know how to get started, can I just show up?
Our recommendation for makers who don’t know where to start is to come to Hatch and get a tour and then register for a workshop in the subject they are interested in. Our volunteers are happy to point you in the right direction; however, they are not available to give one-on-one classes or to create an activity for you to do.
If you'd like to get started at home, try out some Maker Technology online courses from Lynda.com - free with your Watertown library card!
If the library is closed, will Hatch be open?
No. If the main library is closed, Hatch is closed.
Weren’t you at the Arsenal Project?
We used to be at the Arsenal Project but they are undergoing major renovations. We moved to 20 Summer St in August 2017.
Why do you “strongly recommend” that children be older than eight to use Hatch?
Hatch is designed to make many tools accessible but not all of these tools are safe for young children. You may bring your small children to Hatch at your discretion but they must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. None of our workshops are designed for small children.
Can I drop off my child at Hatch and pick them up later?
If your child is older than 12, yes. If your child is 12 or younger, they must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Hatch volunteers and staff are not babysitters, they are at Hatch to assist with the equipment and orient you in the space.
My child wants to use Hatch but will be with an adult that isn’t his/her parent or guardian, can he/she still go?
If your child is going to Hatch with another adult (not a parent or guardian), please print out and sign the Waiver and have the other adult bring it with them.
Can I just call in my 3D print request?
No. Makers must be present to start their print jobs.
Can I check out a tool and bring it home to use (I promise to bring it back)?
Unfortunately, no. We don’t have a tool library that allows tools to leave Hatch.
I have all my own materials for a project, is it okay if I just come to Hatch for the space?
Definitely, you are welcome to use our space.
Can I store my ongoing project at Hatch?
No. We have very limited storage are unable to store ongoing projects, no exceptions.
I heard you have screen printing supplies, why aren’t they listed?
We have screen printing supplies for workshops and used to make them available, however, our space a 20 Summer St doesn’t have a work sink. We decided it was generally too difficult to offer these supplies without a proper method of cleanup.
I have a painting project, can I do it at Hatch? Does Hatch have painting supplies?
Hatch doesn’t have a work sink; therefore, we limit painting activities to water-based paints. Hatch does not offer painting supplies but you are welcome to bring your own.
