We Are Makers
You may have heard some buzz around town about the library’s proposed development of a Makerspace, so I would like to take a moment to tell you a little more about it.
First of all, let’s talk about what a Makerspace is. A Makerspace is a communal facility where people come to create. Often, some basic tools and materials are made available for use by prospective makers. That’s it. Any further definition will be provided by the people who use it and make it hum. Typically, people from the community who have particular skills they’d like to share donate their time to those who’d like to learn. Those learners might, in turn, teach something entirely different. And so, by sharing our skills, the entire community is enriched.
Although the library is advocating for a Watertown Makerspace, we are not envisioning it being housed here in the library. We do not feel we have the appropriate facilities for such an undertaking. We trust a suitable space can be found within town to house a community Makerspace.

Why is the library interested in creating a Makerspace? The public library in America is a unique institution dedicated to shared knowledge and communal access to information, and the WFPL has always endeavored to promote that mission. Just as our library has offered computer classes, job search workshops, English language classes, and citizenship workshops for recent immigrants, we feel that a communal Makerspace is yet another way of making content and resources available to more people.
We are excited about the possibility of building a Makerspace here in Watertown – there are so many possibilities! What would we name it? What tools and materials would we include? Who would volunteer to teach, and what wonderful, new skills could we all acquire? It’s exciting!
To get everyone’s creative juices flowing, we’ll be hosting a Meet and Make session on Thursday, January 23rd at 6:30 PM. Please join us, as we toss around some ideas, and investigate a few of the fun tools we hope to add to our Makerspace!
