Strength in Poetry

As we celebrate another National Poetry Month, we must first bid farewell to the internationally renowned poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko. The Russian poet, novelist and teacher died at the age of 83 on Saturday April 1 in Tulsa, OK. He leaves behind a legacy of works that defied Stalinism, gave voice to the oppressed, challenged anti-Semitism and stirred the hearts of a generation.

Poetry is too often pigeonholed as insular, indulgent and even weak. In honor of Mr. Yevtushenko, let’s remind ourselves of the poets, past and present, that have used their words to influence our attitudes, empower and galvanize action:
